Lady Bulldogs Survive the Spartan Push
In the opening quarter, it must have felt that the Lady Bulldogs were stuck in the pass at Thermopylae as the Spartans unleashed a ferocious first quarter offensive attack with their 6’1” & 6’2” post players each scoring 5 points and their 5’10” guard hitting two 3 pointers.
Their defense was just as potent, protecting the rim and forcing the Lady Bulldogs to adjust their shots due to the Battle size and length. But the Lady Bulldogs settled down as 5'10” Fr guard Bella Campbell was able to work her way into the paint and earn trips to the free throw line, going 4-4.
Showing Their Grit
As the Lady Bulldogs started to climb back into the game after being down double digits, it was a steal by 5'10” So guard Madison Hutton in the final seconds of the opening period that kick-started the Lady Bulldogs. Hutton was able to attack the Battle defender and find 5’8” Sr guard Mariah Watkins who was able to draw contact and convert the bucket earning a trip to the free throw line with no time left on the clock. The and-one play brought the Lady Bulldogs back to within 2, 16-18.
The Lady Bulldogs controlled the game the rest of the way as the defensive pressure made the Battle Spartans uncomfortable. The Lady Bulldogs created 20 turnovers on the game and slowed down the Spartan offense which built confidence in the Lady Bulldogs.
The rising confidence for the Lady Bulldogs was evident as they outrebounded the larger Battle Spartans. Hutton led the Lady Bulldogs with 6 while Campbell pulled in 5. Three players were in double figures with Watkins having a brilliant offensive performance in her final game at the Rolla Fieldhouse with 20 points, Campbell had 18 and Hutton finished with 11.
We will talk more about the Battle game and dig into the Class 6 District 2 bracket when we talk with Coach Charley Parker on Inside the Huddle.
