The Red Hot Bulldogs Take Two in Weekend Contests to Move to 23-7

Bulldogs celebrate their 7-6 extra inning win over Cape Central.
Bulldogs celebrate their 7-6 extra inning win over Cape Central.

May 10th, 2026

The Bulldogs have had several Saturday games this season and it seems like the recipe for the day has been pretty consistent.

Forecast for rain.

Stock up on Quick Dry.

Overnight rain.

An all hands on deck effort to get the field ready.

Push back start time by an hour.

Play the game.

Celebrate the victory.

Why should this weekend be any different? The weekend schedule had the Bulldogs facing the Cape Central Tigers in the opening game followed by Cape Central then taking on Springfield Catholic with Rolla and Catholic then finishing up the day.

The weather pushed the scheduled start times back by one hour. But the day turned out to be a great day to watch baseball as the sun came out, the breeze came through and the fans were entertained as the Bulldogs came away with 2 victories on the day.

Game Delay... Plus Extra Innings

The bats of the Bulldogs were active in the opening game against the Cape Central Tigers as they racked up 13 hits compared to only 5 for the Tigers. But it would take an extra inning to decide this contest.

The Bulldogs were consistent in their production as they scored in 6 of the 8 innings while Cape Central used a big 4th inning where they put up 4 runs to take a 6-2 lead that the Bulldogs would have to battle back from if they were to keep their win streak alive.

This was the 4th game of the week for the Bulldogs with the 5th game still to be played in the afternoon and it surely had to be playing an effect on the bodies of the Bulldogs. The big rallies were not happening, but the Bulldogs did not quit and slowly chipped away at the Tiger lead.

Facing 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th and trailing Cape Central 6 to 5, there was tension in the air at FCNB Field. The Tigers were feeling the pressure as the Bulldogs would add a run inning by inning cutting into their lead. The Bulldogs fans were wondering if this was the day their 13 game win streak would come to an end.

Senior Colton Petersmith scores the winning run after lead-off triple in the 8th. The dirty uniform helps tell the story.

With a 2 and 2 count and junior Chace Hudson on 2nd base after a lead-off double, senior Jack Mrozowicz singled into left field between driving in the tying run for the Bulldogs.

A scoreless 7th inning meant that this game that started over an hour later than originally scheduled, and had taken longer than scheduled to play, was going to take a little longer still.

The Bulldogs were able to hold the Tigers scoreless in the top of the 8th with the top of the line-up coming up for the Bulldogs.

Senior Colton Petersmith, the lead-off hitter who has signed to play baseball with Nebraska, is leading the team in batting average and on-base percentage. He made sure the Tiger fans understood why.

CP with the lead-off triple in the 8th.

Jack with the game winning RBI.

CP hit a line drive over the left fielder's head and used his speed to turn a double into a sliding triple into 3rd base. It was a scary moment for the Bulldog faithful as the field with the quick dry applied to help dry the field, made the dirt less forgiving as CP slid head first into the base. But CP cleaned off the dirt, the blood and got on the base ready to finish the game.

Following a ground out, Mrozowicz again came to the plate and made sure that the Tigers remembered his name as well. Second in hitting, Mrozowicz followed up his game tying RBI with a game winning RBI on a walk-off single to left field.

Senior Jack Mrozowicz talks about the game winning RBI.

The top 4 in the line-up were highly effective in this game for the Bulldogs

Petersmith went 3 for 5 and senior Jenson Thomas went 2 for 4. Senior Landen Richter went 3 for 5 and scored 3 times. Mrozowicz ended the game with 3 RBIs while going 3 for 4, including the game tying hit in the bottom of the 6th and the winning hit in the bottom of the 8th.

Mrozowicz, who took over pitching duties in the 7th inning, recorded the win for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs moved to 22-7 and bump their winning streak to 14 games.

1 Hit Shut-Out Victory Over Springfield Catholic

In the final game of the week, it was time once again for Angelo State signee Jenson Thomas to take the mound. Thomas has been absolutely dominant through the streak with an impressive strike-out to walk ratio and the Bulldogs defense has been locked in.

Unlike the fireworks in the first game for the Bulldogs and shown by Springfield Catholic in their win against Cape Central, this game was all about the defense.

Thomas threw a 1 hitter over 6 and ⅔ innings, striking out 9 and walking 2 in the shut-out victory. Mrozowicz came on to get the last out for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs were only able to score 2 runs on 7 hits in the contest. Petersmith was the only Bulldog to record multiple hits. CP went 2 for 3 at the plate. The lone RBI was driven in by Thomas as he went 1 for 3 for the game.

The win finishes a long week for the Bulldogs but leaves them at 23 and 7 on the season, riding high with a 15 game winning streak.

This is the best record and the longest winning streak for the Bulldogs since at least 2009.

They will be tested in the last week of the regular season as they travel to a neutral site game in St. Louis to take on the #2 ranked team in class 6 the 22-7 Jackson and then follow up with a home game against 18-5 Mehlville.
