The Bulldog bats found contact early and often resulting in crooked numbers on the scoreboard while Colton Petersmith threw a no-hit shutout of the Waynesville Tigers. That combination sent everyone home early due to run rule as the Bulldogs took down past and future Ozark Conference foe, the Waynesville Tigers, 15-0.
Locking In
The senior southpaw threw the no-hit shutout on Thursday at FCNB Field in Rolla. Over the run rule shortened game, in four innings Petersmith struck out five and walked three.
When asked about what was going through his head when he realized he was looking at a no hitter, CP said he wanted to say something to his teammates but decided he better not. ”I was like I can't say it, and so I kept everything to myself and I just had to go out and post strikes and trust my defense.”
The defense responded.
The shut-out almost went away in the top of the second as a hit batsman and two walks gave the Tigers bases loaded and no outs. But the senior dug deep and struck out the next batter. Still not out of the jam, with the bases still loaded, only one out and the batter with a full count, Petersmith induced a ground ball to third baseman Riker Snodgrass who calmly started the 5-4-3 double play to close out the inning.
Coach Ken Hohe recognized the importance of getting runs early and knowing your defense has your back. “It makes it easier to pitch. You can throw more fastballs. You can be more in the zone.”
The Bulldogs did not commit an error in the game.
The Bulldogs Finding Their Groove
When you can shorten a game by putting up 15 runs through 4 innings, you know it will bring a smile to your coach. “We scored 3 in the first, 4 in the second, 3 in the third, and then 5 in the fourth and ended it early. “
The Bulldogs had three players go 3 for 3 on the night. Petersmith, senior Jack Mrozowicz and senior Ruger Covey. Mrozowicz and Covey each went for three RBIs with CP scoring four times.
Junior Blaine Sbabo went 2 for 2 and senior Logan Jenkins with 1 for 1 with two walks.
Mrozowicz has been on a mission since returning to the line-up. He is leading the team hitting .512 on the season with an OBP of .574 and a slugging percentage of .659. “I'm feeling good. I'm hitting well. I'm seeing the ball well.”
With those types of numbers, I asked Jack what was left to work on and he knew exactly where he wanted to focus.“I need to start spreading the ball out a little bit. I'm a big pull hitter, I need to keep my head still, just drive the ball more up the middle. I think that'll allow my game to excel a little more.”
When asked about the 6 game win streak where the runs have gone up and the errors have gone down, Coach Hohe identified two things. “The two things we've done the most is we've thrown more strikes and we've played better defense. And when you're not giving up a ton of free bases, you give yourself a chance to have some nice wins.”
