On Tuesday at FCNB Field, the Bulldogs jumped out early on the Marshfield Bluejays to lead 2-0 after one. The Bluejays were not going to let the momentum stay with the Bulldogs for long as they put 2 runs in the top half of the 2nd to tie the game.
A line-drive single to left field by senior right fielder Jack Mrozowicz put the Bulldogs back on top as he brought in two runners in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 4-2 lead
The Bluejays would answer once again, this time with a big 4 run 3rd inning to go back on top. They would add two more runs over the next two inning putting them up 8-5 heading into the 6th inning.
An Uphill Battle
With their backs against the wall, the gritty Diamond Dawgs would battle back as they have done time and time again this season.
Sophomore Conor Hirtz who came on in relief in the 3rd inning, was able to get the first batter to pop out. Mrozowicz came in to complete the inning with 2 strikeouts sending the Bulldogs to a big bottom half of the 6th.
It was senior center fielder Colton Petersmith who would once again set the tone for the Bulldogs. The Nebraska commit is hitting .407 on the season and singled to start the inning on a hard hit ball to first base where CP used his speed to reach safely.
After a flyout, Mrozowicz, who is batting 0.471, helped his own cause with a hard ground ball to the 3rd baseman advancing the speedy Petersmith to second.
A double steal and a walk to senior Jenson Thomas loaded the bases for senior Riker Snodgrass. Snodgrass, looking to add some RBIs to his total had to settle for just one as he was hit by a pitch, cutting into the deficit, with the Bulldogs trailing 6 to 8 with 1 out.
Covey Delivers
Senior Ruger Covey had watched the pitcher struggle with control the last few batters, walking Thomas and then hitting Snodgrass. He was confident he would be getting something to hit and that he did.
On the second pitch, Covey unloaded a bomb over the left fielder's head, clearing the bases. As Covey slid head first into third base, he came up in his best David Freese celebration. The throw into 3rd went out of play allowing Covey to head home capping off the 5 run inning.
Talking with Covey after the game, he knew he would have a chance to help out his team. “He gave me a first-pitch fastball right down the middle and I said if I see that again, I’m going to swing as hard as I can. Sure enough, he threw it again and I hit it pretty well.” Pretty well matches the kid’s personality, always thinking about the team and discounting the monster shot he delivered.
Wrap Up
Mrozowicz earned the win,.giving up one hit, no runs and striking out two over the final two innings,
Petersmith and Mrozowicz both went 2 for 4 with Petersmith scoring 3 times. Mrozowicz and Snodgrass each had 2 RBIs while Covey collected 3 on the huge triple.
JV Bulldogs Win - Jenkiins Another Walk-Off
With the game tied at 4, freshman Quenton Girondo came in to pitch the 5th inning and made efficient work of the Bluejays. He threw a total of 7 pitches striking out 2 swinging and the other on a pop-up.
In the Bulldog part of the final 5th inning and the game still tied, the first two Bulldogs reach base on a walk and hit by pitch. After getting a pop out, the Bluejays elect to intentionally walk Girondo to load the bases in hopes of forcing a double play.
Apparently, they had not done adequate scouting because up to the plate came freshmen Ty Jenkins. The same Ty Jenkins who 3 days before delivered a clutch hit to give the Bulldogs a dramatic come from behind victory to win the home tournament.
Jenkins delivers again.
Jenkins drives the first pitch he sees out to left field driving in sophomore Connor Hirtz from 3rd for the winning run.
