Senior hurler throw a perfect game for the Bulldogs in the 9-0 win over Cap City.

April 24th, 2026

Spring weather.

A day that started out less than perfect was capped-off by a perfect performance as senior Jenson Thomas threw a perfect game in the night cap of the 3 team round robin.

Battling the Weather

It was supposed to be a relaxing Friday of baseball with a round robin match-up as we hosted Springfield Catholic and Capital City with games scheduled at noon, 2:30pm and 5pm.

But apparently Mother Nature is really wanting some wonderful May Flowers so she sent Spring Showers Thursday night and early morning to deliver 1.5 inches of rain to the Rolla area.

I saw the notice from the school come across my computer expecting the games to be canceled.

But instead it was letting us know that they are working on the field and games would be pushed back by 2 hours.

Coach Ken Hohe heaped praise on the people who turned out to get our natural grass field ready for the games. Parents, seniors, coaches and other volunteers came out early, went to work and had the field ready for the 2pm first pitch.

Rolla Wins First Game Against Overmatched Springfield Central

It was over in the first inning.

The Bulldogs put up 15 runs in the bottom of the first - 13 of those runs with 2 outs.

Senior Colton Petersmith continues swinging a hot bat and hits an inside the park grand slam putting the Bulldogs up 8-0 with two outs.

This big first inning enabled Coach Hohe to get many junior varsity players their first varsity minutes.

A moment that stood out was watching Senior Logan Jenkins pitch while his younger brother freshman Ty Jenkins played 3rd base. Then in the top of the 3rd, Ty took over on the mound for his brother.

Coach Hohe talked about that first game. “Against Central we were able to get a bunch of guys their first varsity appearances.  The two Jenkins (Logan & Ty) pitched it, which is a cool moment for them.  Anytime you can win 15-0 in 3, it’s a momentum builder for your team.”

It was a Perfect Moment

The offenses of both Capital City and Rolla had been on a tear of late and after the tune up with Springfield Central where both teams put up big numbers, the expectations were for fireworks.

The ace pitchers for each staff had other ideas.

Coach Hohe was impressed with how both pitchers started the game. “They shut down the offenses in dominant fashion.  The score was 0-0 after 2 and while Jensen had only thrown 18 pitches to get 6 outs, O’Brien for Capital City had only thrown 16 pitches to get 6 outs!”

It was an error that put a chink in the Cap City armor and opened up the offensive for the Bulldogs as they scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

“Once we had the lead, Jenson took over.  He was more than dominant as he struck out 11 and only threw 84 pitches,” said Hohe.

Two games prior to this one, Petersmith was on the mound on his way to a no-hit shut out of Waynesville. With that fresh on the minds of the team I asked Thomas what was being said in the dugout. “No one was talking about it in the dugout thankfully but the pressure of it definitely grew as the innings went on.”

Coach Hohe highlighted three defensive plays that helped preserve the perfect game:

  1. Senior Ruger Covey’s catch of a low line drive down the first base line in the first inning,

  2. Senior Jack Mrozowicz raced to catch a liner that headed towards the right center gap in the sixth inning

  3. Petersmith, showing why he is heading to Nebraska, by tracking down a ball to deep right center in the seventh.

As each inning progressed with the perfect game still intact, Jenson gained more focus. “Emotionally I would say I was just locked in really because before the game even started Cap City was chirping at us quite a bit.”

Offensively Jenson helped himself as he had a huge day with 3 RBIs going 2 for 4 at the plate. Petersmith went 2 for 3 scoring 3 times and getting an RBI. Senior third basemen, Riker Snodgrass, went 2-4 on the day. Senior catcher, Landen Richter knocked in 2 runs as the Bulldogs completed the perfect game with a 9-0 victory over Capital City.

When the last batter went down looking at a 2-seam fastball at the outside corner, Thomas finally was able to let his emotions loose as his teammates gathered around in celebration.

“It was awesome to see all my guys running up to me just as excited as I was about it. It showed me that we are all truly wanting each other to be the best we can be, and I couldn’t have done it without them either so they deserve celebration as well,” shared Thomas.

That win puts the Bulldogs at 15-7 on the season. Hohe reflected on the performance by Thomas and the Bulldogs. “To throw a perfect game at any level is extremely rare and hard.  It certainly was a performance for the ages and Jenson is really starting to get sharp on the mound.”

“Hopefully the momentum we have right now continues next week with Lebanon, Jeff City and Timberland.”
