With the Lady Bulldogs coming off back-to-back losses to state ranked Lutheran St. Charles and MICDS, according to the records it looked like the Lady Bulldogs may be able to catch their breath. Hickman, however, knew that their record alone did not tell their story because they also played a tough schedule.
The Lady Bulldogs would only shoot 36% from 2 on the evening, in part due to 6’5” Addie Carr patrolling the paint and while Rolla was able to connect on 5 of 10 3-point shots, it was the Kewpies who were feeling hot from the start and never let up.
Stormy Conditions
Coach Charley Parker was in high spirits heading into Thursday night's game despite having suffered back-to-back losses. The growth the team showed and the way they battled gave Parker much to be excited about as they wind down the regular season in preparation for a post-season run.
While the weather outside was no longer stormy and there were clear skies, there was a storm brewing inside the gym as Hickman came out on fire hitting six 3 pointers in the first half on their way to 38 points, 19 being scored in each quarter.
Meanwhile the storm raging with the Lady Bulldogs was in trying to be efficient in their offense. The Lady Bulldogs were only able to score 20 points in the first half. It was a game marred with turnovers and missed opportunities. The Lady Bulldogs trailed at the half 38 to 51,
The Lady Bulldogs attempted to mount a comeback in the 3rd period as they outscored the Kewpies, 18 to 13. The Lady Bulldogs were able to hit three from behind the arc in that third quarter as 5’7” Fr guard Addy Deremo and 5’8” Sr guard Mariah Watkins each connected on their second of the night and 5'10” Fr guard Bella Campbell hit her lone attempt. The Lady Bulldogs only went 5 for 10 from the charity stripe in the quarter leaving crucial points on the court.
But Hickman had other plans as they entered the final quarter leading 51 to 38 and proceeded to put the game out of reach as they went 8 for 9 from the field in the final quarter including hitting all 4 of their 3 point attempts. The onslaught of buckets had Coach Parker empty his bench as the Lady Bulldogs fell, 50 to 73 to drop to 12-9 on the season.
The Wrap Up
The inside-outside combination that Hickman possessed was too much. Hickman went 11 for 25 from deep for 44% with Carlie Moore knocking down 5 3’s for 19pts. When the Lady Bulldogs expanded their defense to address the long range shooting, they dumped it inside to the 6’5” Carr who tallied 18 points on the evening. As a team, the Kewpies 57.7% from 2.
The size of Hickman played a role in the contest as the Lady Bulldogs were outrebounded 21 to 31 and gave up 13 offensive rebounds. When you throw in 15 turnovers and only 11 assists, the scoring struggles become more understandable. Shooting 36% from inside the arc on 14 for 38 shooting is a carry over from the last couple of ballgames where the young team has struggled to finish with contact.
The Lady Bulldogs only shot 12 free throws in the evening, hitting 7 of them. Campbell led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring and recorded another double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while going 5 for 6 from the line. Watkins finished with 12 points as the only other Lady Bulldog in double figures. 5'10” So guard Madison Hutton contributed 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists for the Lady Bulldogs.
Talking with Coach Parker, his focus was on reviewing film after the emotions of the game had subsided to identify what needed to be addressed going forward. A surprising drop in energy and intensity for the Lady Bulldogs left Coach Parker without much to say, other than they will build upon this game, just like they have built upon the previous games.
