Things don’t get any easier for the young Rolla Lady Bulldogs. You compete but fall short against #7 in Class 6, Lutheran St. Charles on Friday, and then take on #7 ranked team in Class 5, MICDS, on Monday evening.
The Lady Bulldogs didn’t look like an underdog on Friday night as they jumped all over MICDS out of the gates and held the lead until the 4th quarter, falling 55-60.
Figured out the First Quarter
Coach Charley Parker has been talking for the last month about finding their identity and using their strength to attack the paint. The Lady Bulldogs were able to do just that on Monday night against the ranked MICDS Rams.“I feel we are starting to click and find our stride and getting better each night.”
The Lady Bulldogs were relentless in attacking the basket in the opening quarter as they outscored the Rams 20-13 in the period. The Rams were caught off guard and ended up fouling the Lady Bulldogs, sending them to the line where they hit 8 of 10 free throws in that period. Once again, 5'10” Fr guard Bella Campbell continues to earn that living at the charity stripe going 5-6 in the period while 5'10” So guard Madison Hutton went 3 for 4 and also ended with 5 points in the quarter.
MICDS Weathers the Storm
MICDS continued to battle throughout the game and when you have 6’1 So guard Jordyn Haywood on your team, the lead is never too big. Haywood, part of the USA team and the top ranked sophomore in the State, continued to chip away at the lead putting up 13 points in the first half.
The Rams were able to cut down on their fouls only sending the Lady Bulldogs to the line twice in the 2nd quarter. After a quiet first quarter, 5’10” Fr forward Rylee Anderson came alive with 3 buckets in the second to pace the Lady Bulldogs with 6 points. While the Lady Bulldogs struggled to convert from the field and ended with only 10 points in the quarter, they limited the Rams to only 13 points once again, maintaining the lead going into halftime at 30 to 26.
Coach Parker was pleased with his team's effort against the talented MICDS squad. “I thought we went in and battled a really tough team to the wire.”
Unable to Stop the Rams Charge
The two teams continued to battle in the 2nd half. Campbell again attacked the paint earning two trips to the line, going 4 for 4 and converting on 2 other field goals for 8 of the Lady Bulldogs 15 points in the quarter.
For the Rams, it was the outside shot that began to find its mark in the 3rd quarter. They hit 3 from downtown in the 3rd period and hit 5 total in the second half giving them 6 for the game. While the Lady Bulldogs only two 3’s of the night came back in the first period by 5’8” Sr guard Mariah Watkins and 5’7” Fr guard Addy Deremo.
Leading by 2, 45 to 43 going into the last frame, the Lady Bulldogs could not get their offense back on track and only scored 10 points in the final period. Finishing through contact has been part of the growing pain of the young team as has been the recognition of valuing each possession late in the game.
“We played a really really good game on both ends of the floor. We just had a couple miscues late that were costly,” said Parker has he reflected back on the effort from his team. “Basketball is a game of runs and MICDS made the last run allowing them to come out on top.” The Lady Bulldogs fell 55 to 60 and are now 12-8 on the season.
The Wrap Up
Campbell had a big night for the Lady Bulldogs with another double-double as she scored 21 points and pulled down 13 boards while going 11 for 12 from the line. As a team, the Lady Bulldogs went to the line a whopping 22 times and knocked down 19. Hutton and Anderson nearly had double-doubles as well with Hutton scoring 8 points with 11 boards while Anderson had 12 points and 9 boards. Watkins had a quiet night scoring but accounted for 5 assists.
MICDS was a very good team with an outstanding player in Jordyn Haywood who Coach Parker said “was the real deal.” The Rams went 12 for 16 from the line but also connected on 6 of their 16 attempts from behind the arc and accounted for 15 of their 34 second half points.
The Lady Bulldogs again had a big night on the glass outrebounding the Rams 38-27 and pulling down 14 offensive rebounds to the Rams 8.
“Like I said before we are right there. We are competing with the best in the state just coming up short, eventually we are gonna come out on top in these games.”
