Coming off their most disappointing loss of the season to the Hickman Kewpies, the Lady Bulldogs were needing to get back to their winning ways and they did just that, dismantling the Waynesville Lady Tigers 70 to 43.

The 70 points scored by the Lady Bulldogs was the most since the opening round of the Mitch & Terisa Esquibel Holiday Tournament on December 26th versus Hazelwood East. The Lady Bulldogs swept all three contests with the C-Team winning 43-4 and the JV winning 56-10 and moving to 18-0 on the season.

Thriving in the Chaos

It was a sloppy game overall with both teams combining for 46 turnovers. But the Lady Bulldogs defense extended full court to create chaos, resulting in layups for the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Bulldog season steal leader, 5’8” Sr guard Mariah Watkins, was able to get some easy layups as a result of the pressure D but was also the recipient of some great assists as they took advantage of  some backdoor cuts.

Waynesville enjoyed an early 5 to 2 lead in front of the large crowd gathered for Pink Out night. But that lead was short lived as Rolla dialed up the intensity going on a 12-0 run to take control of the game, building a 12 to 5 lead. The Lady Tigers were finally able to stop the bleeding with a couple of free throws, but the respite was short lived as the Rolla defense continued to convert turnovers to points finishing the quarter on a 17-3 run and taking a 21 to 8 lead into the second quarter.

Thriving in the Chaos

The Lady Tigers decided to return the favor in the second quarter as they extended their defense causing the Lady Bulldogs to turn it over. Waynesville cut the Rolla lead to three points with a 13 to 3 run to open the 2nd quarter.

The three-ball was the equalizer for Waynesville helping them get into the game as they knocked down 3 in the second period to cut the Lady Bulldog lead to 3 points with 2 minutes left in the half, 24-21.

That is when the Lady Bulldogs found their second wind and extended their full court pressure. The Bulldog D that created turnovers and got steals in the first quarter squelched the Tiger comeback and finished on a 5-0 run to take a 29-21 lead into halftime.

Closing Out the Game

To start the 3rd quarter Watkins found her range hitting back-to-back 3’s in the middle of an 8-0 run to start the half and finished with 3 3’s for the quarter and 11 points.

A half-time talk by Coach Charley Parker focused on taking care of the ball, but also on “one more” which is making the extra pass to find the open teammate. It was on full display in the second half as the Lady Bulldogs put up 41 points getting open looks for kickouts and open pathways to the bucket.

Waynesville would make another run midway through the 3rd period cutting the 15 point lead to 9, but the Bulldog defense would again step up as they recorded 21 steals for the game and closed out the 3rd quarter on a 7-2 taking a 50-36 lead into the final period of play.

There would be no final push by Waynesville as Rolla picked up where they left off with a 10-0 run to start the period on their way to out scoring Waynesville 20 to 7 in the 4th quarter to secure the 70 to 43 win.

The Wrap Up

In the post game interview, Coach Parker was critical of the sloppy play by the Lady Bulldogs who committed 16 turnovers while only having 13 assists. Coupled with the early shooting woes, where the Lady Bulldogs failed to convert at the rim and only hit 9 of 16 free throws, you could have thought that they had lost the game.

As the season is winding down and Coach Parker prepares the team for post-season play, it is the little things, especially  for a young team, that will help them secure victories against the more veteran teams. Coach Parker knows this and is making sure the team understands his expectations.

A highlight for the Lady Tigers happened in the 3rd quarter, when Waynesville Coach Kevin Schnicker called a quick timeout as 5’10” Senior Guard Riley Grosvenor was recognized for scoring her 1000th point of her career. Grosvenor finished with a team high 17 points for the Lady Tigers.

5'10” So guard Madison Hutton had an impressive night for the Lady Bulldogs as she played with renewed confidence and intensity attacking the basket. Hutton scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half.

5'10” Fr guard Bella Campbell who has been on a roll offensively as of late struggled to get her shot to fall. However, she continued to control the boards pulling down 12 to add to her team high average of 8.5 rebounds per game.

Watkins led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with a game high 23 points while also getting 4 steals and dishing out 5 assists.
