It was a game delayed due to a bomb threat prank called in by students. Lebanon High School took immediate action to secure their students and worked with law enforcement officials to search the grounds and assess the threat.
Once the situation was resolved, Lebanon athletics notified Rolla that it was safe to make the trip, as the Bulldogs used the drive down I-44 to lock in and get ready to play.
And were they ever read.
If there was ever a question as to whether the challenges of the day would negatively impact the Bulldogs, they wanted to put that to rest as soon as possible.
The Bulldogs Offense was Full Throttle
The Bulldogs offense decided to make a statement early. After a lead-off single by senior centerfielder Colton Petersmith, Landen Richter woke everyone up as the left-handed hitter pulled a shot over the right field fence to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 in the first inning.
I spoke with Richter about that moment. “CP got on with an infield single and I knew I had to do a job to get him into scoring position. I just put a good swing on it and watched it go.”
Flirting with the No-Hit Shutout
Only five days removed from a Perfect Game, Jenson Thomas returned to the mound. A lead-off walk took the pressure off a repeat perfect game performance for Thomas who settled in and delivered another electric performance.
Thomas allowed one hit in the bottom of the second but struck out 11 batters while walking four in the shut-out victory.
Coach Hohe recognizes the connection between early runs and solid pitching. “Landen’s big blast in the 1st set the tone. So much easier to pitch with a lead & Jenson was dominant again. Their lone hit was right in the foul line over 1st base. The 11 K’s show his dominance.”
The Bulldogs offense did not score in the next two innings, but scored at least two runs in the last four innings to secure the dominant 11-0 road victory over the former and future Ozark Conference foe.
More fireworks happened in the top of the 6th, as Thomas put an exclamation point on his pitching performance hitting a bomb over the centerfield fence and off of the scoreboard to drive in three runs. Thomas was 1 for 3 on the evening with those three RBIs.
Wrap Up
Offensively, Richter finished with 4 RBIs going 2 for 4 at the plate. Senior Ruger Covey also went 2 for 4 and scored a run for the Bulldogs.
It was a big night for Richter and one he felt he needed. “I felt good to be hitting the ball well after some recent struggles but my teammates always kept me up and really helped with the slump I was in. We are really clicking as a team and really hitting the ball well. We are doing jobs when needed and coming up with those big hits in the big moments and overall just having great at bats at the plate as a whole.”
CP went 3 for 4 on the night, scoring twice, driving in a run, and just for some extra flavor he stole a couple of bases as well.
“Scoring in 5 of the 7 innings shows our depth offensively and to continually add on is demoralizing,” said Hohe.
The Bulldogs, now 16-7 on the season, have won their last 8 games. During this win streak, the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 85-11. They have shut-out their last 4 opponents while putting up 50 runs over those 4 games.
Coach Hohe likes how they are coming together as a team, but understands that they cannot rest. “We are on a strong streak but we have 2 tough opponents in Jeff City and Timberland the next 2 games so we need to continue our focus and our work ethic.”
Next Up
5/1 at Jefferson City (9-12) 5pm start
5/2 V/JV hosting Timberland (11-9-1) 11am
The Bulldogs will finish up the week by traveling to Jefferson City to take on the Jays and then a Saturday home game against Timberland.
The Bulldogs will seek revenge against Timberland as they handed the Bulldogs their most lopsided defeat of the season, a 3 to 15 loss at the Missouri River Festival. The Bulldogs are a different team then they were during that error plagued stretch so be sure to turn out for the game.
