Head Soccer Coach Matt Calvert will be stepping down as the Rolla High School Girls Soccer Coach effective immediately. Calvert will stay on as the Head Boys Soccer Coach.

Calvert submitted his resignation to the school and then notified the team that he would not be returning as the Lady Bulldogs Soccer Coach next season. Calvert cited the need to spend more time with family as coaching both soccer programs limited his availability.

The search for the new Lady Bulldogs Soccer Coach is already well underway and an announcement is expected in the very near future.

Calvert's Tenure as Head Coach

Calvert was a 2013 graduate of Rolla High School and played for Hall of Fame coach Mike Howard. After college, Calvert returned to the Rolla Public School System and served as an Assistant Coach to Howard as well as Howard's, replacement, Mike Armstrong.

Calvert took over the reins in July of 2023 when Armstrong stepped down. Armstrong coached for 3 seasons from beginning in 2020 after Howard retired. He was 72-60-2 overall, 36-30 at the helm of the Lady Bulldogs and 36-30-2 with the Boys program.

Calvert was only the 4th Boys Soccer Head Coach and 3rd Girls Head Coach in program history.

This season the Lady Bulldogs soccer team did not when a game, going 0-18 on the season and only scored 1 goal while allowing 94. Calvert's career overall coaching record is 57-62-1. Under his tenure the Lady Bulldogs have gone 20-30-1 while the Boys team has gone 37-21.

The last time that a District Title in soccer was won by a Rolla team was in 2019 when both the Boys and Girls teams won their district, under Howard.

The Legacy of Coach Howard

Mike Howard had one of the finest careers in high school soccer. He finished his career with 885 combined wins with 468 on the boys side and 417 on the girls side.

Howard built the soccer program in what proved to be the most successful sports program at Rolla High School in regards to consistency and production.

  • 19 conference titles

  • 31 district championships

  • 11 state quarterfinal appearances

Howard was inducted into the Missouri Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame in 2015.

He was recognized as the Missouri State Coach of the Year, All-Midwest Region Coach of the Year, and was named the MSHSAA Girls' Coach of the Year during his career.

Who Will Be the 4th Girls Soccer Coach in RHS History?

It would be fun to speculate... will Coach Howard come out of retirement?

What about one of Howard's kids, Jason or Nicole, who have both gone into coaching after successful high school and collegiate careers?

Will there be someone on staff ready to make the jump?

With the number of All-State and collegiate players that have come through Rolla High School, will the call go out for one of the alumni to come back to their Alma Mater?

Maybe it will be an out of shape 56 year-old guy who knows nothing about soccer but loves to coach... nah...
