The Bulldogs were needing to pick up a game or two due to early season weather challenges. Coach Ken Hohe wasn’t looking to simply add a game to the end of the schedule to keep the boys loose, he wanted to continue to challenge them in preparation for a State fun.
Enter the Jackson Indians. Currently the #6 ranked team in Class 6 and was as high as #2 at the last rankings release. To make this game work, they decided to find a neutral site in St. Louis to cut down on travel time. St. Louis Community College was the choice and the game may have been short on fireworks, but it showcased pitching talent in the Bulldogs 1-0 victory.
Bulldogs Break the Win Record
It was a game that lasted only 1:35 minutes. But it’s a game that will last longer in the Rolla High School record books. The 1-0 win over Jackson gave the Bulldogs their 24th win of the season, breaking the record that was held by the 2018 squad that went 23-7-1 on the season and won the last district title for the baseball program.
With a home game on Friday and Districts starting Monday, the Bulldogs have an opportunity to add to their record setting season.
A Bulldog team that averages almost 8 runs a game was only able to muster a single run, but when you have the pitching staff of the Bulldogs that have locked in to a new degree, that is all they needed.
Dominant Performance
Senior ace Jenson Thomas started the game for the Bulldogs. Thomas, who has been on an incredible run on the mound, pitched an efficient 6 innings striking out 11 and only walking 1 batter, while giving up no hits. Senior lefty Ruger Covey, who leads the team in ERA with just over 1, came in for the last inning to get the save and maintain the combined no-hit shutout.
Hohe once again, was impressed with the Bulldog hurlers. “Jenson was dominant. He was able to control the zone and all of his pitches. To go 6 innings on 74 pitches with 11 K’s shows just how dominant Jenson was against Jackson.”
“Ruger came in a very tough spot. He threw strikes and we felt he struck out the #2 hitter (who reached base on a walk), but ended up forcing a double play to end the game.”
The Indians pitching staff held the Bulldog bats to only 4 hits on the day as a team.
The only run of the ballgame came in the top of the 2nd inning. Covey hit a lead-off triple to right field. Two batters later, junior Blaine Sbabo bunted Covey home when he reached safely on a throwing error.
Senior Riker Snodgrass was the only Bulldog to get multiple hits as he went 2 for 3 at the plate.
The Bulldogs are now 24-7 on the season riding a school record 16 game win streak. They will finish up the regular season.
Rolla Baseball - The Pitchers Program
It marked the 4th no-hit game for the varsity squad and the 8th for the program this season. The JV squad has thrown 3 no-hitters and the freshmen team also has one.
As a program, they also have had 7 1-hit games with the Varsity recording 3 of those and the JV throwing 4 of them.
Coach Hohe is quick to give praise to his Assistant Coach Zach Studdard who works with the pitchers and calls the game.

The District Bracket is Set
The seeding meeting was held on Wednesday the 13th prior to the Bulldogs big victor over Jackson. Had the meeting been held a day later, chances are the Bulldogs would have been the #3 seed giving them a much favorable draw in the first round and delaying the meeting with the #1 seed, Eureka Wildcats.
Based on the district format, the top seeds will host the first round game with all additional round games being played at Eureka. That means the Parkway South Patriots will be showing up in RoMo on Monday the 18th for a 4:15pm first pitch. The Patriots are 14-16 on the season and have played a brutal schedule. They are a dangerous #5 seed that the Bulldogs will not be able to look past.
Coach Hohe knows the Bulldogs are facing a tough battle to return to the State Playoffs. “Our district is pretty stacked. Eureka, Lafayette, Marquette, Parkway South are all strong teams. I think any of the top 5 could win it and I am certain we have the talent and heart to do it.”
When asked what it will take for the Bulldogs to make it through, Hohe’s answer was all about the team. “We will have to play well and different players will have to step up, but we are excited for the opportunity and can’t wait to play.”
