After an opening game where both teams combined for 17 made 3 pointers, it looked like we might be in for another long ball match-up as 6’0” Jr guard Jeshawn Henderson of the Rolla JV recorded the first points of the game with a corner 3 against rival Waynesville.

While Waynesville had the size advantage starting 3 players over 6’4”, it was the long ball for the Bulldogs that proved to be the difference as Rolla hit 7 on the night to only a single 3 for the Tigers.

A Confident Rolla JV

The JV Bulldogs were confident heading into their opening game of the Bulldog JV Tournament as they faced the Varsity Waynesville squad at the Phelps Health Boys Holiday Tournament on December 28th in the Consolation game. Dealing with a last minute drop in the tournament, Coach Josh Vinyard stepped up and put his squad into the Varsity Tournament.

The JV Bulldogs hung with the Varsity Tigers only trailing by 5 at halftime, but were outscored in the second half 21 to 36.

Rolla Turned Up the D

The defense by the JV Bulldogs gave fits to the JV Tigers all night as they switched between man and zone as well as taking opportunities to trap in the corners. The Tigers only managed 4 points in the opening quarter and trailed the Bulldogs 4-9.

The offense picked up for both teams in the 2nd quarter as 6’0” Jr guard James Scheck was able to work his way through the Tigers defense to get buckets at the rim, finishing with 11 points in the first half. 5’8” So guard Logan Litz came off the bench for the Bulldogs and sparked the offense garnering 7 points in the quarter.

For Waynesville, it was 6’5” So forward Jah’tori Castillo that was doing damage inside for the Tigers. He finished the half with 6 points in limited minutes with foul trouble. But the young forward made his presence known as he controlled both the offensive and defensive glass.

Bulldogs Extend Their Lead

Enjoying a 22-12 lead at the half, the JV Bulldogs were not going to take any chances with the explosive JV Tigers. As they started the game, the Bulldogs found Henderson in the corner for another 3 ball to start the scoring. The Bulldogs extended the pressure on the Waynesville guards, not allowing them to get comfortable feeding the post. The Bulldogs held the Tigers to 6 points in the quarter, taking a 34-19 lead into the final quarter of play.

The 4th quarter proved to be the highest scoring quarter of the game for both teams as Waynesville extended their press to force some turnovers and speed up the pace of play. Waynesville was paced by 6’3” So guard Cameron Compton who came off the bench to put up 7 points in the final quarter and lead the Tigers in scoring with 11.

The Wrap Up

Compton, who has grown his game with valuable minutes in varsity action, was a focal point for the Bulldog defense all night as Coach Vinyard made sure the Bulldog defenders knew where he was on the court. Castillo, who finished with 10 points, battled throughout the game and rounds out a talented sophomore class that has a bright future for the Tigers.

The Bulldogs were led by Scheck, who finished with a game-high 21 points and handed out a handful of assists. Scheck finds himself splitting time between Varsity and Junior Varsity as the senior heavy varsity squad limits his minutes in the rotation. But his game was on full display as he used physical drives to the rim, finishing with contact as well as knocking down 2 3’s in rhythm and some mid range shots as well.

Litz again provided spark in the 4th quarter for 8 points and finished with 15 for the game.

In the Battle From Deep Cap City JV Outlasts Fatima JV

It seemed like Capital City and Fatima JV teams got the memo that the Fieldhouse at Rolla High School is a great place to shoot the 3 ball. Both teams came out firing to kick off the Bulldog JV Basketball Tourney as each team had the green light to let it fly from deep.

The Cavaliers from Cap City and the Comets from Fatima each hit 3 3 pointers in the first part of the opening quarter in a back and forth affair. The Cavaliers, who played with a trapping full-court defense for most of the night, allowed the Comets to get their threes in transition and found themselves trailing 9-11 midway through the 1st quarter.

But the Cap City defense settled in and the pressure started to pay off as the Cavaliers were able to turn Fatima over and create easy baskets. It was 6’2” Jr guard Anthony Samuel that led the way for the Cavaliers, putting up 8 points in the first quarter and finishing with a team high 13 points. The Comets were forced to take a time-out but they couldn’t stop the tide and Cap City finished the first quarter on a 12-0 run.

Facing a 16-32 deficit at halftime, Fatima made adjustments after the intermission on the defensive side of the ball to create turnovers of their own and slow down Cap City. Another great adjustment was to find the 5’11” Jr sniper Ty Brandt roaming behind the arc.

Brandt, who hit 3 3-pointers in the first half to keep the Comets in the game, hit 3 more in the 3rd quarter to cut the lead to single digits. He tallied 2 more in the final period, giving him 8 for the game, to help tie the game at 51 with 2:40 left.

But the offense for both team disappeared in the final minutes, and it was a single free throw that was the difference in the final 30 seconds that gave the Cavaliers the 52-51 victory. It was 5’11” So guard who pulled down several offensive rebounds in the final two minutes who limited the offensive opportunities for Fatima but was fouled on one of those rebounds and knocked down the winning free throw.

On Saturday, 9:00am Rolla vs Fatima will face Rolla at 9am and then take on Waynesville at 11:30am. Capital City will play Waynesville at 10:15am and then will battle the host Rolla in the last game of the day at 12:45pm.
