Bulldogs Get 19th Win as They Take Down Battle, 11 to 8

It wasn’t the Battle of Thermopylae, but in this skirmish at Battle High School the Bulldogs offense overpowered the Battle Spartans as they scored 11 times on 15 hits, winning 11 to 8.
Rolla Moves to 19-7 with 3rd win over Battle in the last three years
It was 5-4 after two innings, and both teams knew they were in for a battle (see what I did there?!) for the rest of the way.
The offense production was there for both teams as they each scored in 5 of 7 innings. But the separation came in the 4th inning. The Bulldogs were able to put up 3 runs and hold Battle to a single run.
The Bulldogs used a battery of pitchers. Jenson Thomas finished with the win. He was followed up by senior Landon Brown, junior Chase Hudson, and senior Jack Mrozowicz came in to sit down the last batter.
Leading 9-6 going into the 7th inning, the Bulldogs added two more runs on a blast over the right field wall by senior Logan Jenkins, driving in junior Blaine Sbabo who reached on a double. The Bulldogs were sitting comfortably with a 5 run lead heading into the bottom of the 7th.
Wrap Up
While it was a big win, there were some rough patches throughout the game that the Bulldogs had not seen in the previous 10 games of their win streak. “Sometimes it is important to be able to win when you are not at your best. Against Battle we were not at our best,” reflected Coach Ken Hohe.
Senior Colton Petersmith went 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs. Junior Blaine Sbabo went 3 for 3 on the night, scoring once and driving in a run. Jenkins drove in 3 runs on the night going 2 for 4 and also scoring twice.
The Bulldogs hit 7 doubles on the night with Sbabo and Petersmith each hitting 2.
Coach Hohe was excited to see the Bulldog offense continue to see the ball well and drive in runs. “Offensively we had a strong game but we had some base-running miscues that ended multiple innings early.”
Despite the miscues on the base paths, the Bulldogs also had much success.
It wasn’t just the 15 hits on the night that led to the 11 runs by the Bulldogs. They were an absolute menace on the base paths. The Bulldogs stole a total of 9 bases in the game with senior Jack Mrozowicz stealing 3 bases and senior Landen Richter with 2.
Defensively, the Bulldogs dealt with a tight strike zone on the night and the knowledge that the Spartans had heavy bats that could change the course of the game with a single swing.
“Defensively we only had 1 error, but it was costly as we gave up a run from it,” said Hohe. “Pitching wise we struggled to throw strikes with 9 walks and we hit 4. A handful of wild pitches and a passed ball were costly as well.”
But after the string of 10 dominant victories, sometimes it’s a nice reminder that not every game will be easy and as Coach Hohe said that even in the close ones you still need to find a way to win. “With all of that being said we went on the road after a long weekend and picked up the victory.”
Junior Varsity Dispatch the Spartans 9 to 1
The JV Bulldogs were on point in their ballgame as the 3 hit performance with no errors only allowed 1 run for the Battle Spartans JV squad.
Offensively, the Bulldogs bats were rattling as they scored at least 2 runs in the first 4 innings to put the game away early.
Kyllian Ace goes 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs and scores twice to lead the Bulldog Bat Brigade as they put up 9 runs on 9 hits in the 5 inning contest.
Sophomore Connor Hirtz drove in two runs on a double while also throwing 7 strikeouts in 4 innings to record the win.
Freshman Westin Richards closed out the contest in a hitless final inning.
