Bulldogs Finish Regular Season 25-7 with a 12-8 win over Mehlville

Class 6 District 2 Baseball starts Monday May 18th.

The Bulldogs are in the midst of rewriting the Rolla High School baseball record books. They have finished the regular season 25-7 giving them the most wins in school history. Sitting at 8-7 on April 11th, the Bulldogs have reeled off a school record 17 wins in a row with the Mahlville Panthers out of St. Louis being the latest victim.

The Bulldogs have now turned their focus on the loaded Class 6 District 2 and prepare for a next-game mentality as they look to keep this run going.

Bulldogs Put Up the Runs

The Panthers tied it in the 2nd inning and then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 3rd. The Bulldogs responded in the home half of the 3rd as they put 4 runs up on the board to jump back on top, 5-2.

Three straight walks for the Bulldogs to start the inning, a passed ball and a wild pitch allowed the Bulldogs to tie the game. A ground out by senior Landen Richter puts the Bulldogs on top and moves the runners. 

Senior Colton Petersmith stole home followed up by a Jenson Thomas RBI single that finished off the scoring for the Bulldogs in the inning giving them a 3 run advantage.

The Panthers tied it up in the top of the 4th at 5, and the Bulldogs had enough.

As Coach Hohe has mentioned many times, the Bulldogs have threats up and down the line-up and during their 17 game win streak, the production has been on full display.

Junior Blain Sbabo, at the #7 spot, led off the bottom of the 4th with a double on an opposite field fly-ball. This energized the Bulldog dugout and the Bulldog fans. Senior first baseman Logan Jenkins comes to the plate and crushes a shot to center, scoring Sbabo on a triple. 

The Bulldogs were not done. 2 batters later with Jenkins on 3rd and CP on first after a walk on 4 straight pitches, Richter comes through with his own triple clearing the bases. Richter would later come around to score on a passed ball.

The Bulldog bats didn’t stop.

Senior Jack Mrozowicz singles on a full count pitch followed by a Thomas walk. Working the bases, the runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd as senior Ruger Covey came to the plate to single in two more runs, putting the Bulldogs on top 11-5.

The Panthers would try to answer but their charge fell short as they scored 3 runs in the top of the 5th, but the Bulldogs pitching locked in and secured the 12-8 victory for the Bulldogs. 

The win added to their school record win total of 25 and also to the longest win streak in school history of 17.

The Wrap Up

Petersmith went 2 for 2 at the plate with a triple and walked 3 times as he scored 4 runs. Richter led the Bulldogs with 3 RBIs and Covey added 2.

The Bulldogs threw 6 pitchers on the day. I asked Coach Hohe if that was planned or just how it unfolded. “We did plan on throwing everyone that pitched.  Originally, we were spreading them over 2 games but once Jenson went 6 innings against Jackson we had to do it over 1 game.”

As a crew, the Bulldogs gave up 8 runs on 7 hits, striking out 7 and walking 4. It might not have been the most ideal performance, but Coach Hohe said it was worth it to get the arms ready for a State run. “Getting them on the mound was important and coming away with a win when not throwing our best or playing our best defense was important.”

Preparing for the Patriots

The seeding meeting was held on Wednesday the 13th prior to the Bulldogs big victor over Jackson. Had the meeting been held a day later, chances are the Bulldogs would have been the #3 seed giving them a much favorable draw in the first round and delaying the meeting with the #1 seed, Eureka Wildcats.

Based on the district format, the top seeds will host the first round game. That means the Parkway South Patriots will be showing up in RoMo on Monday the 18th for a 4:15pm first pitch. The Patriots are 14-16 on the season and have played a brutal schedule. They are a dangerous #5 seed that the Bulldogs will not be able to look past.

These two teams last met in the semifinals of the Class 6 District 2 tournament. The Bulldogs fell to the Patriots, 5-7, as the Patriots made a post-season run and finished 3rd at State.

The Bulldogs are 25-7 and are riding on a 17 game win streak. They are averaging 8.1 runs per game while allowing 4.3 runs.

Parkway South is 14-16 on the season scoring 6 runs and allowing 5. They have won 6 of their last 7 games after starting the season 0-5. Only 5 of their wins are against teams with a winning record. Their best wins came on back-to-back outings as they defeated Class 4 #10 ranked Westminster Christian 4-2 on May 6th and on the following day defeated Class 5 #4 Rockwood Summit, 14-4.

There are three common opponents between the two teams this season. The Bulldogs shutout St. Charles West 10-0 while the Patriots fell 11 to 12. They also both faced Timberland. Rolla split the contest falling 3 to 15 in their last loss but avenged that loss with a 7-1 win at home. Parkway South defeated them 6 to 5. Both teams dominated Washington.

The pitching staff for Parkway South is led by junior Andrew Heskett and 6’4” sophomore Brennan Boyer who is sporting a 0.47 ERA.
