In his last outing, Senior Colton Petersmith threw a complete game no-hitter against Waynesville. This time facing the Jeff City Jays, he threw a no-hitter through 6 innings and senior Landon Brown came on to throw a hitless 7th inning to keep the combined no-hitter in place.

Pitching and D

It was another gem of an outing after a string of strong performances by the Bulldogs pitching staff. In the previous game Senior Jenson Thomas threw a 1 hit shutout against Lebanon just a week after throwing a perfect game against Capital City.

“Colton and Landon combined to give us our 3rd No-Hitter in the last week - 4th when you add in our perfect game,” said Coach Ken Hohe.

During their 9 game win streak, the Bulldogs have only allowed 13 runs while scoring 93!  They have had 4 shutouts during that stretch and only 1 game where they gave up over 2 runs. Probably the most striking stat has been the decline in the number of errors.

In the first 15 games the Bulldogs were 8-7 and had tallied 45 errors during that span. In the 7 losses, they had 22 errors with 23 in their 8 wins. The Bulldogs were winning despite the rash of errors.

This stretch of play has the Bulldogs playing clean baseball. They have only committed 9 errors in the 9 game win streak.

Taking Down the Jays

The Bulldogs got on the board in the first inning when a lead-off walk to Petersmith and a stolen base put him in scoring position. Senior Landen Richter hits a deep fly ball into centerfield for an out, but the speed of Petersmith allows him to tag and with the throw being off line, to come around and score.

There would be no more scoring until a big 3rd inning by the Bulldogs.

With one out in the top of the 3rd inning, Thomas doubled in senior Jack Mrozowicz who had reached on a single. A sacrifice bunt by senior Ruger Covey advances Thomas to 3rd base but leaves the Bulldogs with two outs.

The Bulldog offense didn’t seem to mind.

Back-to-back singles by senior Riker Snodgrass and junior Blaine Sbabo each led to an RBI putting the Bulldogs on top 4-0. An error by the left fielder allowed senior Logan Jenkins to reach base and drive in the 4th run of the inning.

Leading 5-0 going into the bottom of the 3rd, the Bulldogs had the run support they needed to allow Petersmith and the Bulldog D to do their thing.

Rolla turned three double plays in the game to help maintain the no-hitter. During this 9 game win streak, the ability of the pitchers to throw strikes and the fielding have been critical to limiting runs for those runners who do reach base. Only 1 error on the night has been the recent trend unlike the early season error counts that plagued the Bulldogs.

A 2 run bomb by Petersmith in the top of the seventh that finished up the Bulldogs scoring.

Wrap Up

The Bulldogs had three players with two hits. Petersmith, Thomas and Sbabo with CP driving in two RBIs. Petersmith and Mrozowicz each stole 3 bases in the win.

“CP was great from the start.  Jeff City only had 2-3 balls hit hard the whole game.  He finished with 7K’s, picked a guy off first, induced a ground ball double play, and a fly ball double play.  When you add in his day offensively (2-4 with 3 runs, 3 Stolen Bases, and a Homer), he clearly was dominant in every way.”

Coach Hohe was impressed with senior Landon Brown coming in closing out the game. “Landon did a great job.  He came in with 2 on, 0 out, and a no-hit shutout going.  He got a double play and then a strike out to preserve the no-hitter.  Tough spot and he handled it well.”

Junior Varsity

Freshman Quintin Girondo went 3 for 3 for the Bulldogs driving in 2 runs and scored twice. Sophomore Conner Hirtz went 2 for 3, drove in a run and scored twice. Freshman Ty Jenkins went 1 for 2 and finished with 3 RBIs.

On the mound, the Bulldogs threw 4 pitchers giving up 5 hits and 4 runs with Dominic Spinaio recording the win.
