When we spoke with Head Coach Matt Calvert on Inside the Huddle previewing the upcoming season, it was clear that this season’s success would not be found in wins and losses but in growth in the players and the team.
Replacing 11 seniors is an incredible task, especially when you mix in new players to the sport, moving to new positions, and adjusting your strategy to account for the lack of overall experience.
5th Annual Blue Fish Soccer Tournament
It was a gorgeous weekend that not only kicked off Spring Break for Rolla High School but marked the kick-off of the Blue Fish Soccer Tournament. It is the 5th year that Blue Fish Printing has sponsored the season kick-off tournament at the Rolla sports complex.
Unlike past years where all games were played on both the grass and turf fields, this year added a twist as games were played at Union High School due to construction necessary to replace the turf field.
The structure of the tournament was a 6 team pool play format with Pool A games being played at Rolla High School and Pool B games played at Union High School. The finals of the tournament were played on Saturday, with the two pools playing each other according to how they finished in pool play.
The winners of each pool would play each other for first place. The 2nd place finishers would play each other for 3rd place, while those who finished 3rd in each pool would play for consolation.
Springfield Catholic Cruises to the Championship
In Pool A hosted at Rolla High School, the opening Friday games featured the Rolla Lady Bulldogs taking on the eventual tournament champions, Springfield Catholic, 0-7. The aggressive, attacking style of the Fightin’ Irish put the Lady Bulldogs on their heals from the start and they played the entire game trying to defend their goal.
The next game of the day showed the dominance of the Springfield Catholic team as they took down St. Francis Borgia 7 to 1.
In the night cap in Rolla, the young Lady Bulldogs again failed to mount an offensive attack and fell to Borgia, 0-6.
In Pool B games played at Union High School, the host Union Wildcats fell to St. Vincent in the opening game of the day, 0-3. St. Vincent then defeated Washington Lady Bluejays, 3-1, to secure a spot in the Championship game.
The final game of Pool B had Washington defeating Union 6-0, putting them in the 3rd place game.
Championship Saturday
Championship Saturday kicked off at Rolla High School with the 10am Consolation game between the two host teams, Rolla and Union. Rolla was unable to find the back of the net and fell 0-3, making Union the Consolation victors.
The 3rd place game featured the Washington rivalry between the public and private schools located in Washington Missouri. As expected this was a battle from the start and ended in a 1-1 tie.
In the Championship contest, Springfield Catholic was finally challenged as they met up with St. Vincent. St. Vincent did their best to try and match the offensive energy of the Fightin’ Irish, but in the end the onslaught was too much and St. Vincent fell 4-6 to the Tournament Champions, Springfield Catholic.
A huge shout out to Mike Fisher and the Blue Fish Printing team for not only once again sponsoring the Blue Fish Invitational, but also working the clock and announcing.
