There are some athletes whose statistics tell the story. Then there are athletes like Jack Mrozowicz, where the numbers only scratch the surface.

Sure, the numbers are impressive.

Three hundred and twelve career tackles. An All-State safety. A two-time state wrestling qualifier with more than 100 career wins. A baseball player who led the Bulldogs in home runs while hitting over .350. A 4.0 student and National Honor Society member.

But if you've watched Jack play over the last four years, you know that isn't really what makes him special. What makes Jack special is the combination of instincts, toughness, leadership, and humility that coaches spend years trying to find. And now, that combination is staying right here in Rolla.

Last fall, Jack signed to continue both his football and baseball careers at Missouri S&T, becoming one of the rare athletes to compete in two collegiate sports. For the hometown crowd, that's a pretty exciting thing.

A Football Player Who Always Seemed One Step Ahead

Missouri S&T Head Football Coach Andy Ball didn't hesitate when asked what stood out about Jack. "He's incredibly football intelligent. He's got a huge football IQ."

Anyone who watched Friday nights at Rolla High School already knew that. Jack had a way of arriving at the football before anyone else seemed to know where it was going. His angles were different. His reactions were quicker. His tackles were more certain.

As Coach Ball explained, "Most tackles are missed on the approach to the tackle. He's really instinctive and because he's so smart with football, he's able to be in the right position to make those tackles."

That instinct helped Jack finish his senior season with:

  • 140 total tackles

  • 86 solo tackles

  • 9 tackles for loss

  • 2 interceptions

  • 6 pass breakups

  • 1 forced fumble

He also contributed offensively with more than 450 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns. Rolla Head Football Coach Derick Heflin summed up Jack's impact with one statement that says all you need to know. "After three years, he was one of the best safeties we've ever had here." That's saying something.

The Baseball Opportunity That Started It All

Coach DeGraffenreid talking about Jack being a 2 sport athlete.

Interestingly enough, baseball may have opened the door first. Long before Missouri S&T football entered the picture, Miners Baseball Coach Todd DeGraffenreid had already identified Jack as someone special.

"A couple years ago he came to one of our prospect camps and stood out then as a young guy. If he continues to develop and mature, he's going to have a future in college baseball."

The Miners continued to follow his development, watching him become one of the top multi-sport athletes in the area. Eventually, Missouri S&T offered something few schools were willing to provide - the opportunity to play both sports.

"I feel like we got a steal," DeGraffenreid said. "There weren't a lot of places that were going to give him the opportunity to do both sports."

For Jack, it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up. "I used to dream of something like that," Jack said. "Watching Kyler Murray get drafted by the A's and then go play football in the NFL, I thought maybe I could do that at S&T."

Built for Busy

Playing two college sports isn't easy. Coach Ball knows it. Coach DeGraffenreid knows it. Jack knows it. "He'll have a lot on his plate for sure," Coach Ball said.

But if there is one athlete built for staying busy, it might be Jack Mrozowicz. Throughout high school he balanced football, baseball, wrestling, academics, and leadership responsibilities while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA.

When asked about juggling three sports growing up, his answer was simple. "I love being busy all the time. I don't want to sit at home and do nothing." That mindset may ultimately be his biggest advantage at the next level.

More Than an Athlete

The numbers are impressive. The accomplishments are impressive. But ask the people around him what they'll remember most, and the conversation quickly moves beyond statistics.

RHS Baseball Coach Ken Hohe described him as a tremendous student and an athlete who wasn't simply part of teams, but a major contributor to each of them. Coach Ball talked about his leadership and passion on the field.

You could hear him communicating. You could see him organizing teammates. You could feel his energy.

When I asked Jack how he wanted to be remembered at Rolla High School, his answer wasn't about tackles, home runs, or medals. "I guess just as someone the younger kids can look up to." That answer probably tells you everything you need to know about him.

Resting This Fall

Jack’s collegiate football career will have to wait a little bit longer as a lingering injury from football season and aggravated during wresting and baseball seasons will require surgery this summer.  Not the news Jack wanted to hear. "Yeah so it is definitely frustrating knowing that I'll be out for the whole season. I had plans on earning playing time and playing a big role for the team, but it is what it is."

While it will force Jack to redshirt for football, he will be ready to go for spring baseball. "Now I'm just going to treat it like a normal red shirt year. I'm going to use this time to heal up, get stronger, and learn. I'm still going to be super involved with everything, watching film and getting better every day."

The Best Part? The Story Continues Here in Rolla

The hometown kid is staying home, Missouri S&T gets an outstanding athlete, and more importantly, they're getting an outstanding young man.

And for Rolla fans, the best part is this story isn't over.

Friday nights at Rolla High School may be behind him, but the opportunity to watch Jack Mrozowicz continue competing just a few blocks down 10th street feels pretty special.

Sometimes the hometown kid staying home turns out to be the perfect ending... or maybe, in this case, it's just the beginning.
