Coach Charley Parker made a conscious decision to beef up the schedule to prepare their team for a post season run. In a gauntlet of state ranked competition, next on the list was Logan Rogersville who is currently ranked #4 in Class 4 entering the game 11-3.
But it was more than a game that the Lady Bulldogs lost at the hands of the talented Wildcat team as junior All-State guard, Rylee Dodson left the game with an injury in the 3rd quarter. It was a freak accident where after getting a steal, Dodson raced to the basket attempting a layup when the defender got tangled up and stepped on the back of Dodson’s leg. After taking a brief respite on the bench, Dodson wanted to give it another try.
That was short-lived as Dodson returned to the bench and spent the rest of the game with the trainers.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to shake off the slow first quarter start and climb back into the game as they outscored the Wildcats 19-14 in the second quarter. Dodson recorded 10 points in the quarter to pace the Lady Bulldogs including 2 from downtown. Dodson, who was on fire all season from behind the arc, was shooting 58% for the season. Inside, it was 5’10” freshman forward Rylee Anderson who was gave to get some buckets inside the paint.
When talking about the resiliency to fight back from the early deficit, Parker shared, “We got down big early, came back and cut it to 7. But we have to learn how to put four quarters together.”
With Dodson leaving the game, the Wildcats were able to adjust their defense and points were hard to come by for the Lady Bulldogs, scoring only 12 points in the second half on their way to a 36-52 defeat, dropping Rolla to 9-4 on the season.
The Wrap Up
The Lady Bulldogs struggled at the line, finishing 10-19 for the game. This young team will have to grow up fast without Dodson who was the only player to reach double figures. It will take a collective effort by the Lady Bulldogs to manufacture points going forward.
A critical stat for any team is the rebounding margin and that has been a challenge for the Lady Bulldogs all year. “We didn’t do a very good job controlling the boards giving up 15 offensive rebounds,” said Parker. “We gave them 22 second chance points and we can not do that against a good team.”
JV Improved to 11-0 by Winning the 4th Quarter
In a back and forth game where the host Wildcast won the opening quarter and the Lady Bulldogs took the 2nd quarter, the even match-up resulted in a 17-17 tie heading into halftime.
The offense for both teams settled in coming out of the break, but alas neither team could separate themselves as both teams tallied 15 points in the quarter. Heading into the final quarter tied at 32, It was the Lady Bulldogs who decided that a loss was not in the plans.
The Lady Bulldogs went 7-8 from the line in the final quarter to seal the deal. Double digit scorers for the Lady Bulldogs was 5’4” So guard Shine Martia and 5’10” So forward Riley Hollis. Hollis continued her dominant inside play as her presence inside also forced the defenders to foul and putting here at the line where she hit 3 of 4. Martia, who runs point for the Lady Bulldogs was able to attack the Wildcat defense and get to the free throw line, going 6-6 for the game and 4-4 in the crucial 4th quarter to ice the game.
