Bulldogs Finish 2-0 in Day 1 of Bank Classic Tourney in Union

The Bulldogs put up 20 points in the two Pool Play games of the Union Bank Classic, but the story of the games couldn’t be farther apart.
In the first you had a game where the Bulldogs led 8 to 1 after 4 innings and seemingly set for an easy victory, but Union battled back to fall to get within 1 but finish the comeback.
In the final game the Bulldogs finished it early as they scored 12 runs against St. Joe Lafayette while holding them to only 2 runs on 1 hit, ending the game after 5 innings due to runs.
Taking Down Union
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 8 to 1 lead after 4 innings against the host Union Wildcats in the opening pool play game of the Bank Classic. But the Wildcats were not going down without a fight.
Rolla took advantage of 6 errors by the host team on their way to scoring 8 runs in the game.
The Bulldogs were outhit 5 to 6 in the game but when you include some timely hits by Jr. Blaine Sbabo mixed in with some runners on base due to those errors, the result was 4 RBIs by Sbabo off of 2 for 4 hitting.
The Bulldogs were able to hold off the Wildcats and walk away with an 8 to 7 victory.
Senior Jenson Thomas recorded the win for the Bulldogs going five innings giving up five hits and five runs. Thomas struck out seven and walked three.
Senior Landen Richter came on in relief giving up two runs on one hit with two strikeouts.
Rolla was able to steal six bases on the Wildcats with Sr. Riker Snodgrass and So. Connor Hirtz each snagged two bases.
Early and Often Against St. Joe Lafayette
It was a big night on the mound for the southpaw, Sr. Ruger Covey. The Missouri State - West Plains commit threw a 1-hit complete game, giving up two runs while striking out six and walking two.
When you pair up a dominant pitching performance with a Bulldog offense that hit over .600 as a team it’s easy to see that they would score 12 runs on 14 hits in the shortened five inning game.
It was a seven run 3rd inning that put away the game for the Bulldogs. The inning featured four singles, two walks, a double, a triple and a couple of sacrifices allowing 11 batters to come to the plate.
Covey helped his own cause by going 2 for 3 and driving in four runs. Lead-off batter and Nebraska signee, Sr. Colton Petersmith went 2-2, scored 3 runs and tallied 1 RBI.
In all five Bulldogs went 2 for 3 at the plate: Seniors Landen Richter, Jenson Thomas and Covey along with Juniors Chase Williams and Blaine Sbabo.
