On Tuesday the 6-2 Rolla Bulldogs Baseball team hosted last season’s class 3 State Champions, the Fatima Comets. The Comets were 3-3 on the season entering the game but had one three straight.
A three run bomb in the first inning put the Bulldogs in a hole to start the game and could never string together the hits to make the comeback complete. Trailing by 6 runs heading into the final inning, the Bulldogs were able to rally to get 3 runs, to make the final deficit 5 to 8, as the Bulldogs dropped to 6-3 on the season.
Bulldogs Searching for Consistency
If the Comets thought the Bulldogs would lay down after the 2 out, 3 run blast in the first inning they were sorely mistaken. The Bulldogs quickly put runners on base as their first two batters on base with no outs. Alas, the Bulldogs could not bring them in to score and trail 0-3 after 1 inning of play.
In all, the Bulldogs would have 4 innings where the first two batters would reach base with no outs and in only two of those innings were they able to score any runs.
When asked about the team’s performance,Coach Hohe was pretty direct. “I thought we played flat and had little to no life. We let things we cannot control dictate how we respond to adversity.”
Coach Hohe was referring to multiple calls in the field throughout the game that led to numerous meetings from both coaches with the officials to discuss the calls.
After giving up another four runs in the top of the 6th to the comets, the Bulldogs were down 2 to 8 going into the bottom of the 7th. The Bulldogs made a valiant effort to get back into the game with some singles, a hit by pitch, a balk, and a sacrifice, but unfortunately, they could only get 3 runs across the plate, ending the game, 5 to 8.
It was a productive night for the number 1 and 2 hitters in the line-up for the Bulldogs. Seniors Colton Petersmith and Jack Mrozowicz reached base in all four of their at-bats on the night and racked up all 5 of the Bulldogs hits. Petersmith, the University of Nebraska signee, went 3 for 3 for the game and is leading the Bulldogs in hitting at .448 with an OBP of .514.
It was Mrozowicz’ first game of the season and there was little rust that needed to be knocked off as he went 2 for 3, reaching safely all 4 at bats with a fielder's choice and a walk. Mrozowicz also recorded an RBI.
I asked Mrozowicz as to whether he was surprised at his performance at the plate in his first game back. “ I hold myself to some higher standards so this is definitely what I expect from myself. I make sure to get my cuts in at practice and usually feel pretty good while doing it, and even when I'm not around baseball for a while I am really good at picking up right where I left off. So that's exactly what I did.”
Petersmith has speed to spare and was able to chase down several hits into center field that robbed the comments of a hit. It was also evident on the base paths as he stole 2 bases, giving him a team high 10 on the season.
Junior Chase Hudson took the loss bringing his season record to 1-1 on 3 appearances on the mound.
The Bulldogs did turn two double plays in the game. The first your standard 6-4-3 with shortstop Jenson Thomas, getting it to Landen Richter playing second and then on to Ruger Covey at first.
The other double play came when their baseman Logan Jenkins had a fielder’s choice to get the runner at 3rd and then on to first Covey at first.
Catching up with Jack Mrozowicz
I talked to Mrozowicz, a Missouri S&T Signee to play both baseball and football, about his return, “It felt really good to finally be back playing in a real game again. I've been practicing still every day with the team and picking everyone up during the games, but to finally get back in the game felt good.”
Jack and I talked about the inconsistency with the team during their 6-2 start. Seeing those moments where everything clicks and then those moments that can leave you scratching your head.
Having spent his career playing with this team and spending the first part of the season in the dugout instead of on the diamond, I wanted his perspective from the view of the player.
“It all starts in practice. We have to make sure we are locked in while we are practicing our bunt plays, taking fly balls, hitting, etc. I think that will lead to more consistency in our play and we will hopefully start to get hot.”
Bulldog JV Can’t Keep Up with the Streaking Comets
After giving up a run to open the ballgame, the Bulldogs JV answered in their half of the first and took an early lead scoring two runs leading the Comets 2-0 after one. But that is all of the offense the Bulldogs would muster as they fall 2-5 to the Comtes in 5 innings.
The Bulldogs threw three pitchers in the contest, So. Kyllian Ace, Jr. Zyair McWilliams, and So. Dominic Spinaio. The trio combined for 10 strikeouts, but also 10 walks during the game.
Freshman Quentin Girondo led the Bulldogs at the plate recording 2 of the 3 hits, going 2 for 2 at the plate. The other hit belonged to Spinaio.
