March 26, 2026

It was text book spring weather during spring break, as the Bulldog Track & Field team spent their afternoon in Jefferson City at an open tri-meet with the host Jeff City Jays and the Helias Crusaders.

With the challenges of fielding a full roster and limited practices heading into the season, an open meet like this gives an opportunity for everyone to participate and assess where they stand versus the competition.

Prepping for the Season

Coach Cody Sneed previewed the season on Inside the Huddle and was excited to see the young Bulldogs join the mix of his varsity squad. They concluded their 14th practice on Thursday prior to the first meet and the official start of the High School Spring Break the next day.

The last practice consisted of Time Trials to establish baselines for the upcoming season. Coach Sneed was happy with the day.

“During their Time Trials, multiple records were broken by our athletes. Everyone had a great time, and we all enjoyed ice cream afterwards.”

The Season’s First Meet

Heading into the meet against Jefferson City and Helias, the Bulldogs knew they were not starting off the season with a fluff meet. But in the Track & Field world, while the meets are scored on results, the participants true competition is with themselves and improving each day.

The Bulldogs ended the day with the three first place finishes. Junior Matthew Banta won the 1600m Run by almost 9 seconds. The 4x800 relay team of Jr. Carter Brown, Sr. Scott Williams, Fr. Jakob Fischer, and Banta also brought home first place. Junior Tucker Sowers took first in the javelin beating out fellow Bulldogs juniors Camran Moore and Clayton Sandifer who finished in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Sowers also finished in 2nd in Shot Put and 3rd in Discuss.

Junior Jay Loos

Junior Jay Loos had a big day at the podium as he was part of two 2nd place finishes with the 4x100 and 4x400 teams. Loos also finished 3rd in the individual 100m and 200m sprints.

Sophomore Bennett Duehning finished with two 2nd place finishes in the 4x200m and the 110m hurdles as well as 3rd place in the 4x400m relay and the 300m hurdles.

Freshmen Sophie Blakely

A couple of freshmen girls came up big in their varsity debut. Sophie Blakely finished 2nd in both 800m and 1600m runs. She was also part of the 3rd place 4x400m relay team. Grace Fontenot finished 3rd in pole vault and part of the 3x100m relay team. She narrowly missed a 3rd place medal in the individual 100m by 0.2 of a second.

Overall Coach Sneed was pleased with the outing. “We used Monday's meet as a practice against stiff competition, to get times and measurements on the board, and to become reacclimated with the format and rules. I'm pleased with the results, and feel we started off the season on the right foot.”
