Despite a tough shooting night for the Lady Bulldogs, they played even with the Borgia Lady Knights for 3 quarters. But a 23 point 3rd quarter proved to be the difference and despite a late 4th quarter surge, the Lady Bulldogs could not close the gap and fall to 14-10 on the season.
Cold Shooting Night
It was a tough way to go for the Lady Bulldogs at St. Francis Borgia High School on Tuesday night. Rolla was able to get the ball to the rim throughout the game but struggled to finish shooting just 37% from inside the arc in the evening.
A measure of success for the Lady Bulldogs can be found in the number of trips that they take to the free throw line. They were able to use their inside presence to get to the free throw line, but were only able to knock down 8 of 14. Despite shooting only 57% from the FT line, they still outshot the Lady Knights who only made 1 of their 10 attempts from the charity stripe.
Despite the cold shooting night, Rolla only trailed by at the half, 24 to 25. But the 3rd quarter was the difference in the ballgame as the Lady Knights outscored the Lady Bulldogs 23 to 12 in the 3rd quarter. Taylor Scheer knocked down 3 of her 5 3-pointers in the 3rd quarters on her way to a game high 23 points.
Borgia knocked down 8 shots from deep while Rolla could only connect on 2 of 11 from beyond the arc for 18% for the game.
Trailing 36 to 48 entering the 4th quarter, the Lady Bulldogs came out with a sense of urgency and set the tone defensively, getting steals and forcing turnovers. They were able to cut the deficit in half, but that final spurt seemed to empty the gas in the tank as the Lady Knights were able to close the game on their own run. The 4th quarter ended in a tie with both Rolla and Borgia scoring 12 points, resulting in a 48 to 60 loss for Rolla.
The Wrap Up
The cold shooting night and committing 15 turnovers was too much to overcome. The Lady Bulldogs ended with 3 players in double figures. 5’10” Fr forward Rylee Anderson led the way with 14, 5'10” Fr guard Bella Campbell with 12 and 5’8” Sr guard Mariah Watkins with 11. Campbell and Anderson both added 8 boards
It’s a game Coach Charley Parker would love to have back as he searches for consistency in his young Bulldogs. Finishing through contact and minimizing turnovers will be the key to finish out the last two games before district play.
Both of the final two games of the season will be at home against teams who are under 500 on the season. Look for Coach Parker to use them games to prepare them for the brutal Class 6 District 2 playoffs.
